URL Shorteners basically shortens a long URL, making it easy to share.
Sharing a very long link like
“http://www.wikimapia.org/#lat=12.9697655&lon=77.5600433&z=11
&l=0&m=a&v=2&Bengaluru-Bangalore-The-Silicon-Valley-of-India”
through e-mails, status updates(Facebook, Gtalk, etc)looks very untidy. Also it is difficult to share long links on microblogging sites like Twitter, where the numbers of characters are limited. Shortening a URL before sharing not only makes it easier to share but it also looks much cleaner. The above link could look like “http://lin.cr/5ut”. There are lots of URL shortening sites. I will be listing 5 URL shortening sites I have personally used and liked(in no particular order).
1. TinyURL
This has been around for a very long time and is one of the most popular URL shorteners. The main advantage of TinyURL is that the shortened links never expires.
2. Lincr
I came to know of Lin.cr through Twitter. Many people were sharing links using this service. I tried it and absolutely loved it.
3. is.gd

4. tr.im
Another free URL shortener with a very apt name. This one makes it easier to share the shrtened link on Twitter. No need to copy/paste it, just enter your Twitter user ID and password and its done. The shortened linked is autmaticaly posted on Twitter.
5. Snipr
Besides shortening the URL, with Snipr we can do much more with the shortened URL. The shortened URL can be emailed, tweeted, shared on facebook, added to popular bookmarks like del.icio.us, etc with great ease from Snipr.com itself.
