Google has released a light weight Google Desktop Client for Gmail. As of now it is available only for Windows user. You will need to have Google Desktop installed to use this gadget. This gadget has pretty much all the features you need in a basic email client. Features according to the official Gmail blog:
It covers the basics such as reading, searching, and sending messages. You can star messages, use the same keyboard shortcuts, and we didn’t forget about contact auto-complete.
The gadget doesn’t take up much system resourse. As for screen real estate, you can resize the gadget window to your liking. It’s definitely worth a try. Install the Gmail gadget from here.
