Some people say Indians are born with cricket in their blood, not true for me. I am an Indian, a proud one at that, but not a fan of cricket.

That being said, I like oCricket, which happens to be a social network for cricket fans. I’m an internet junkie, so when a new social network is launched, I can’t help but sign up and explore the same. Even if it’s about cricket.

What got me hooked to oCricket was it’s simple yet useful features. While you can’t poke or throw sheep(thankfully), oCricket has most features(friends, groups, et al) that a typical social network has to offer. But being a niche social network about cricket, more emphasis is given to sharing cricket related photos/videos/articles. If you are a registered member you can write your own articles(it has blogging features too!), post links to already existing materials on the internet. Submitting content is really easy as it supports Flickr, Picasaweb, Youtube, Blip.tv, Metacafe. You just have to submit the link and oCricket will automatically categorize it as a pic or video, credit the original source, display necessary copyright disclaimers, et al.

But the thing I like most is the frequency at which the oCricket team introduces new features. Some interesting stuff that the team rolled out recently…

Free Score Update through SMS.  You just have to sign up for oCricket and update your mobile number. At the time of publishing this post free sms score updates is available only for USA and Indian numbers but I’m sure it’ll be available for other countries pretty soon.  This feature will no doubt be a boon for cricket fans.

A Gtalk/Jabber IM bot.  Add seeker@ocricket as a friend on your Gtalk or any Jabber IM and get the latest info/news from the cricketing world. The latest score, interesting links, photos, videos and many more available through your favourite chat client.

seeker@ocricket.com

Cricket Talk. Which is basically an app which makes it easier to track cricket related conversation/tweets on Twitter and reply/comment on the same. Replies can be relayed to your twitter timeline. It uses oAuth to integrate your twitter profile, so you don’t have to give your twitter ID and password. It is a user powered app. Users suggest keywords which are in turn voted by other users as ‘hot’ or ‘not’. Once a keyword becomes ‘hot’ enough, Cricket Talk will track it for others users to enjoy.

Considering oCricket is a new startup, I’m sure we will get to see many new features.

Do check it out if you are a cricket fan.

They also have a contest going on where you could win lotsa goodies, visit Cricketheist for details. I won a mini bean bag for my phone, so can you.

Looking for a job? Isn’t it a pain to send/forward your resume and cover letter to all prospective employers manually. Some guys probably felt the same way and, unlike me, did something about it.

They started SMSResume.in.

smsresume

SMSresume.in emails your resume and coverletter on your behalf.

All you have to do is register with SMSResume.in for free. Upload your resume and coverletter. And the next time you want to apply for a job, all you gotta do is send the employer’s mail ID as an sms to 9711532380 in the format shown below(this is important!).

Format:      Resume<space>employer’s mail ID

Example:   Resume recruitments@xyzcompany.com

smsrightOn doing that, they will send your resume & coverletter to the employer’s ID. They will also send a BBC to your email ID for confirmation.

The employer will recieve the email as if it is sent from your email ID.

You can also keep track or your resume and to whom you have sent by logging into your SMSResume.in account.

And this service is for free. Yes, SMSResume.in is free.

I loved this idea, it’ll make life easier for job seekers. Especially for those who doesn’t have access to internet at the comfort of their home.

And I agree with what a tweep(@shilps31) had to say about SMSResume.in. It will definitely help when you are in a hurry. Twitter response

In India, number of mibile phone users is significantly more than those with access to internet. So this is a neat idea.

What do you think of SMSResume.in?
